How to Train A Kitten to Come To You And Stay
I got my kitten when it was young. Maybe 3 months old. I was cautious at first, but a friend of mine has a boat load of baby kittens, and naturally the conversation came up where the magic words came about, ” Do you want to take one Home?”. I knew that my wife would not have it.
We had new furniture inside, and all cats want to stretch their claws on furniture, and cat feces can put off a smell also. I looked over all the kittens and told him which one I want. I ask that he keep the kitten for a few more weeks so it could stay with it’s mother and baby brothers and sisters. I picked one of the males, as I did not want hundreds of kittens running around my property. (Our home is out on Lake Whitney). Now, I had to go home and tell my wife. This is a lot harder than picking the kitten, as she does not like animals inside the home, and to train this kitten I was going to have to keep it inside for awhile. Hopefully, me getting this kitten would not cause a D I V O R C E! I told her about the kitten. I let it settle in, and withstood the barage of loud talk I received upon letting her know I was getting us a cat.
We already had 5 goats, 4 dogs, 1 bird, and now a cat! Immediately she said we had enough mouths to feed and did not need anymore. I let it alone for a week or so, and came back at her again with the cat idea. She wasn’t as bad this time. So far, so good. I called my friend and ask him to bring the kitten out to the house. He arrived with the cat, a cat house, cat litter box, etc. This is how I then trained the kitten to know only me, and come to me whenever I call for it. Here’s how you do it. I went to the store and purchased a cat collar. I then purchased a 20 ft. cat leash and attached it to the kitten’s collar. This allowed enough room for the cat to play, use the litter box, eat, drink and sleep. I attached the leash to a toy where the cat could stretch it’s claws (and not use our furniture). I had the leash far enough away from the furniture where nothing could happen, and cause my wife to have one of those so-called “Hissy Fits”. Every once in awhile I would take the leash and the kitten and sit in my recliner watching T.V., and put the end of the leash on my wrist. I did this so if the kitten tried to jump off of me I would feel the tug, wake up, and put the kitten back on top of me.
For about 3 months I did this every night while watching T.V. I also would feed the kitten while it laid in my lap, and eventually the kitten new that being able to sit with me meant “F O O D”. After about 3 1/2 months I started letting the cat go out on the front pourch. The cat would wonder around, and then come back on the pourch. I kept a close eye out, as I did not want to lose the kitten I had trained for all those months. Cats will run off, and sometimes cannot find their way back home. All it takes is someone feeding him, and then he will hang around there forever. (Kinda like buddies of mine. Give them food, water, and shade and they never leave!).
I can now put my cat out all day, and when I walk out and call his name he will come running 50 MPH to me. He thinks F O O D, and I always feed him when I call him so we have a routine here. You can do this if you want to have a good trained cat. I’m not an expert but it works. Every night I let the cat inside, feed him, and then he jumps up in the same old recliner and lays and loves on me until we both go to sleep. He grew up with me, loves me, and respects our home. This was the complete game plan when I first got him. I’ve had my wife for 30 years and still haven’t got the training right on her, but I’m still trying!! I expect to have many a wonderful year with that cat, as I look forward each night to holding and petting him.
He’s a good one, and you can do the same with your new kitten. You just have to train them to only know you, and that will create a bond that will never break, or be broken. If you have some additional ideas, or even a question or two, please use the comment section below, as I would love to hear from you. I appreciate your time today, and may God bless you.
